PYREXAR HyperThermia (HT) systems deliver therapeutic heating via non invasive radio frequency (RF) energy in the 75-140 MHz range (BSD-500 delivers at a fixed 915 MHz) During PYREXAR HT treatment, the cancerous tumor is gently warmed to 40˚-45˚C (104˚-113˚F) destroying malignant cells while preserving normal tissues. This is because higher temperatures selectively damage cells that are hypoxic and have a low pH, a condition of cancer cells that is not present in normal cells.
Superficial
The BSD-500 Superficial is a versatile, fully self-contained treatment system in a mobile configuration for maximum treatment flexibility of superficial tumors (within 1” of skin surface).

Interstitial therapy capabilities are incorporated into the BSD-500.
The BSD-500i is a standalone interstitial therapy system configured similar to the BSD-500 but without external wave guides and supporting apparatus. The BSD-500 is the most popular PYREXAR HT system with more than 50 in clinical use throughout the US.

(Note this is for the Sigma Eye in Europe. The applicator arrays in the U.S. only provides up to 8 dipole antennas.)

- Phased Array Dipole Applicators: Sigma Elipse and Sigma 60 (standard); Sigma 40/30 (optional in some countries).
- Sigma Base: Comfortably positions and supports patient on sling inside phased array aperture.

- MR image guided real-time non-invasive thermometry
Components
Generator for BSD-2000
The generator develops high frequency electrical power output from a conventional three phase 415Vac source with multi-channel independent phase and amplitude adjustment capability. An integrated computer controls forward and reflected power, phase and power level on each channel. Frequency range of 75-140MHz.
Generator for BSD-500
The generator develops high frequency electrical power output from a conventional single phase 115/220Vac source with multi-channel independent phase and amplitude adjustment capability. An integrated computer controls forward and reflected power, phase and power level on each channel. Frequency 915MHz.
BSD-500 Wave Guides
Using electrical signal from generator, the wave guide creates and projects the RF energy beam toward the treatment area. Tissue absorption of this energy beam causes warming by tissue excitation.

Interstitial Coaxial Wire (915 MHz):
The MA-251 is a semi-rigid 15.5 gauge wire coaxial cable providing an ellipsoidal heating pattern approximately 4.5 cm in length along the applicator shaft with heating to the wire tip.
The MA-251 fits inside 5F catheters commonly used for brachytherapy.
RF Shielding
Annular Phase Array wave guides use non-ISM frequencies and require RF shielding. Single Source and Interstitial Wire wave guides use the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) radio band (915 MHz) and do not require RF Shielding.
Water Module
Water filled bolus on wave guide surface provides dielectric load and energy-confining medium.
- Modes: Fill, Drain, Circulate, Heat, and Cooling.
- Temperature Range: 25°C to 40°C
Sigma Base (BSD-2000)
The Sigma treatment base provides comfortable patient positioning and thorax-to-toe array aperture location possibilities.
- Hydraulic patient elevation/tilt.
- Dielectric patient isolation.
- Integrated hot and cold water reservoirs with quick drain capability.
RF Shielding
All BSD-500 components are self-contained in a portable unit on swivel-locking casters with generator and computer assembly securely rack mounted. The rotating thermometry interface, thermal well, and interstitial coaxial wire cable applicator interface panel is oriented for easy access. The waveguide applicator support arm is mounted on a column that provides overhead suspension for superficial treatment waveguides applicators.
